‘Spider-Man 4′ gets scrapped
Spiderman 4 will not happen – be grateful
When you take a look at the previous three films, Spiderman 4 being shelved may be a blessing. And that’s from a fan. I forgave, and even liked some of, the plot differences from the comic books. I was a big fan of Tobey Maguire even before he donned the Spider-Man costume, and I thought he made the perfect Peter Parker. Let’s be honest with ourselves: the first Spiderman was cheesy but forgivably so, the second was good, but the third lacked panache, and the dance number in the middle was almost unforgivable.
That said, what fourth movie in any series has turned out really well? Some contend the fourth installment of Rambo was. Remember “Batman and Robin”? That film scarred me for life, it was so bad. Sitting through all the paperwork for an auto financing deal is less painful than that movie.
What will Tobey do now?
MTV reports that “Maguire has long been said to be a contender for the role of young Bilbo Baggins in the Peter Jackson-produced, Guillermo del Toro-directed “Lord of the Rings” prequels.” MTV also said Tobey denied it up and down the board. Time’s going to tell on that one.
IMDB lists more than a dozen projects “in development” on Tobey Maguire’s page, but one of them is “Spider-Man 5.” Also, “Spider-Man 4″ as being in pre-production, so I think perhaps my go-to movie information site is a little behind. Nowhere on there does it say anything about Tobey being a hobbit. The fabled Hobbit movie, as close to realization it may be seem, seems equally also to be stuck in development hell.
Perhaps he’s outgrown superheroes
He definitely is best known for his superhero role, but he is a good actor – he was, after all, nominated for a Golden Globe for his role in “Brothers.” Though I haven’t gotten to see him in that drama yet, that’s a pretty good indication of the direction that might be best for his career.
Then again, maybe he’ll just keep mixing it up. His next film to come out will be “Details,” which is an indie black comedy. The list of feature films he has been in is pretty heavy with dramas, so seeing him in a comedy, even a dark one, will be a fun change.
